2015 Subaru WRX Set for LA Debut

Today Subaru fired off the first teaser photo of the forthcoming 2015 WRX. What we can tell from the photo is that it will likely be available in red and it’s not going to look like the much-heralded WRX Concept that was shown earlier this year. Once again, the WRX Concept seems to be a case of Subaru engineers messing with us. Still, the LED headlight surrounds look pretty good.

Like all performance models, what really matters with the new 2015 WRX is what’s under the hood and how it manages to put power all the way to the ground. With Subaru’s recent successes in mainstream cars (Crosstrek and Forester, specifically) I think we can expect that the new WRX won’t suffer the same blandness as was inflicted on the 2008 model… at least, under the skin it won’t.

We’re already scheduled for some wheel time in this new WRX later this year and we’ll have all the facts on the new car as they’re available. Keep Subiesport bookmarked for more info!

And, only an hour later, the full car has leaked via a fan forum in Japan:

2015 Subaru WRX

Good stuff:

  • In spite of other Subaru turbos losing their hood scoop, the 2015 WRX wears it proudly.
  • Love the foglight treatment. It creates a visually strong vertical array.
  • The multi-element headlights with LED surround recall some similarity to the WRX Concept – though, it also reminds us this car could have looked even cooler.
  • They kept the wide fender flares
  • Black and red is a fantastic debut combo.

Bad stuff:

  • Other than the nose, the rest of the car is bland. Especially the  rear quarter-panels.
  • Beltline reminiscent of the 3-series, but the Bimmer wears it better.
  • Wheel design doesn’t break new ground.
  • No wagon.

Still sad we’re missing the 5-Door Hatchback. Sounds like Japan will get one. Maybe we’ll get a Hatchback later on in the same way that we were without an STi Sedan for a few years.

Very disappointing. I was hoping or so much more from a car with such a stellar history. This just looks, bleh…
